What is glow disc golf?
Glow disc golf is a variation on the game of disc golf played in the dark, typically at night. Players use lighting to illuminate disc golf baskets and discs, allowing them to see their targets and find their discs in the dark.
Baskets are typically illuminated with LED lights. Discs can either be fitted with lights or glow-in-the-dark tape or manufactured to glow after exposure to UV lights. Put another way, you can buy discs that glow, or you can find ways to make them glow yourselves.
Where can I play?
Most disc golf courses can be adapted for glow play, or you can set up your own course using portable baskets and some lighting.
If you want to play glow disc golf on an existing course, make sure the course allows after-hours play and that it’s safe to play. Some public and private disc golf courses have restrictions on park usage hours, which you should always respect.
Courses with rugged terrain generally don’t make good glow disc golf courses. Difficult terrain and low-light conditions don’t mix well. Those conditions significantly increase the risk of player injuries from slips, trips, and falls.
If you’re playing a course in an area with predators such as cougars, wolves, or bears, be aware that your risk of encounter increases at night.
What equipment do I need to play?
To play glow disc golf, you need lighting for the course baskets and lighting for your discs.
To preserve night vision, a small, bright light placed directly on top of each basket is the preferred method of basket illumination. This can be a battery or solar-powered LED light, a glow stick, or anything else that lights up.
When it comes to illuminating your discs, you have two options. The easiest is to buy “glow discs” designed to glow when exposed to UV light using a specialty flashlight. Your other option is to make your disc glow by way of glow-in-the-dark tape or taping a small LED light to the underside of the disc.
