HOW TO PLAY DISC GOLF

Step 1: Find a Course

The first thing you’ll want to do if you want to learn how to play glow disc golf is find a suitable place to play.

Not all disc golf courses are available for glow play at night. Some are public parks that have hours restrictions, and some are private properties that explicitly forbid entry after dark.

If you’re not sure, the best thing to do is check-in with the property owners, or ask your local disc golf club which courses permit glow play.

Also consider safety! Courses with rough terrain or significant wildlife activity may not be the best choice for your glow disc golf round!

Step 2: Buy, borrow, or make a few glow discs

After you’ve found a course you can play on, you’ll need to secure a few discs to play with.  You have two options here:

Option 1: Use Glow Plastic Discs

Most disc manufacturers release “glow” versions of their popular discs. These are made with a special type of glow-in-the-dark plastic that can be charged with regular or UV light.

(See the adjacent picture for three examples glowing at night.)

These will need to be charged (and recharged) with light every 10-20 minutes of glow play in the dark.

Option 2: Add Lights or Glow-in-the-Dark Tape to Regular Discs

If you don’t have glow discs, you can make your own. The first option is to add glow in the dark tape to your discs. The second option is tape (or otherwise secure) a small light to your disc. Trust us, you don’t want to try night disc golf with discs that don’t glow or light up!

Step 3: Light Up the Baskets!

Well-lit baskets make glow disc golf much more enjoyable. You can find a course with lights permanently installed, find a club that hosts a “glow” night, or set up a course yourself!

1. Find a Course With Permanent Basket Lighting

The easiest way to play is to find a course that has permanent basket lighting installed. These are rare, but they’re out there. It’ll usually be an unofficial thing: your best bet is to ask a local if any courses are set up.

2. Find a "Glow Night" With a Local Club or Group

Some clubs will put on a “glow” night, where a club organizer will set up the entire course for glow rounds. These are usually put up and taken down the same night. Your local club’s Facebook page or website will usually post details.

3. Light it Up Yourself!

If you have permission, it’s easy to light up the baskets. You can run LED lighting along the top edge of the basket, mount an LED light under the top of the basket, or simply throw a light or glow stick in the basket itself.
